What pace do you need to run 10 miles?

Ten miles is 16.09 kilometers: a little over a 15K and about three quarters of a half marathon. It is a popular race in its own right, with classics like the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia and the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile in Washington, D.C., and a favorite long tune-up before a half or full marathon.

The table below covers finish times from 1:00:00 to 2:30:00. Click any row to load it into the calculator. Highlighted rows mark popular goals such as sub-1:15, sub-1:30 and sub-2:00, and each row shows your 5-mile halfway split.

10 mile pacing strategy

Ten miles is long enough that going out too fast gets punished, but short enough that you can hold a hard, steady effort the whole way. Most runners pace it a touch slower than their 10K pace, and a good rule of thumb is that 10-mile pace sits about 10 to 20 seconds per mile slower than 10K pace.

Miles 1-2
Run 5 to 10 seconds per mile slower than goal pace. Early excitement makes goal pace feel too easy, and that is exactly when runners overspend.
The 5-mile checkpoint
Your halfway split should be very close to half your goal time. If you are more than a minute ahead of schedule, ease off now rather than paying for it later.
Miles 6-8
This is where the race is decided. Settle into rhythm, take fluids if the course offers them, and let other runners go by without chasing.
Final 2 miles
If you have paced it well, start building effort at mile 8 and push through the finish. Even a modest negative split usually means you got it right.
