Half marathon pacing strategy

The half marathon is long enough to punish early mistakes but short enough that you can push harder than a marathon. The key is running the first 5 miles feeling like you have something left, then gradually increasing effort through miles 8-10.

The first 5K
Start 10-15 seconds per mile slower than goal pace. The adrenaline of race day will make it feel easy — that's exactly the trap.
Miles 4-10
Settle into your goal pace and stay there. This is where you bank time — not by going faster, but by staying perfectly consistent.
The final 5K
If you've paced correctly you'll have something left. Miles 10-12 are where you can push. Mile 13 is where you empty the tank.
Use your 10K split
Check your 10K time in the calculator above. At that point you should feel like you could run the first half again — if you don't, you went out too hard.
